SDRC Varsity Summer Training FAQs

What athletes are eligible for varsity summer training?

Any rower or coxswain (from SDRC or another club) that has completed their first year of competitive rowing is eligible for summer training. All athletes must have been part of a competitive team and participated in racing previously. Athletes who have done a recreational or non-competitive program are not eligible for summer training. Athletes who have completed a year on the SDRC Middle School squad are not yet eligible for varsity summer training.

Not all of the practices work for my schedule, is that ok?

Not a problem! We know that many athletes have busy summer schedules, so our training schedule is meant to be more flexible than during the season. Athletes are welcome to pick the weeks of practice that work for them. During each week, you can also choose the practices that work for you, but you are highly encouraged to attend all practices.

What types of practices and workouts can I expect?

Generally, our morning practices will be on the water and our afternoon practices will be land conditioning. Practices will be a mix of drilling, steady state, and higher intensity work. Land practices will consist of a mix of erging, running, and weight lifting. Practice plans may be changed by the coaching staff as necessary, so come ready for everything!

What kinds of boats will we be rowing?

Depending on the number and experience level of the athletes each week, this will change throughout the summer. We have every kind of boat class available, and will be sweeping and sculling. Lineups and boatings will be at the discretion of the coaching staff, but we will try to get athletes more experience in boats they have less experience in when possible.

I'm not part of the Juniors program at SDRC, am I eligible for varsity summer training?

Yes! Athletes from other programs or who are just visiting San Diego during the summer are welcome to join us. So long as you have competitive experience, you can pick the weeks that work for you. If you are from another program, please email kington@sandiegorowing.org and let him know that you'd like to join!
