I've never rowed before, is that ok?
No problem at all! Our camps start with all the basics and no experience is needed. Many of the rowers on our competitive team got their starts in a summer camp before joining the team.
What grades are summer camps for?
Our summer camps are for grades 6-12. Each session will be broken up in to a 6th-8th grade group and an 8th-12th grade group. 8th graders have a choice to join whichever group they would prefer. When registering, please use the grade level your athlete will be in during the fall 2022 school year. Unfortunately, we do not have camps available for 5th grade or younger.
For 8th graders, what is the difference in the groups?
8th graders who might be interested in rowing competitively in the fall are encouraged to join the 8th-12th grade group. 8th graders who don't wish to compete or aren't sure are encouraged to join the 6th-8th grade group. The older group will be able to move a little bit faster and progress a little quicker.
What does a typical day at camp look like?
We usually start off each day on the rowing machines going over the basic movements and practicing different parts of the rowing technique. We then proceed out on to the water in single person boats to start getting a feel for the water. We also have 4 and 8 person boats that we can use depending on the progress of the group.
What should I bring to camp every day?
All participants should wear athletic clothing that isn't too loose or baggy. Loose clothing can get tangled up in the equipment while rowing and be very frustrating. Rowers should also bring athletic shoes every day since we typically start with a warm up jog and shoes make the rowing machines more comfortable. Athletes should also bring a hat, sunglasses, sunscreen, and weather appropriate clothing. Water bottles can be kept with the athlete throughout practice and we have filling machines in the boathouse. We have day lockers available on a first come, first served basis. Please leave all valuables at home or in the car just to be safe.
Can I come early or stay later?
Please do not plan on arriving more than 15 minutes early or staying more than 15 minutes late. We have other programs going on and can not supervise summer campers beyond those times.
What if I have to miss a day of camp?
The more practice you can get, the quicker you can make improvements, but please just let your coach know if you need to miss a day so they can plan ahead.
I finished camp and want to continue rowing! What are my options?
For those wishing to continue, we have a few options. Our summer Intermediate Camps offer an opportunity to start building on your skills right away. Intermediate Camps will focus more on getting athletes in to the 4 and 8 person boats and getting a feel for the teamwork aspect of the sport. We will also have our Middle School and High School teams beginning in September for those who want to join the team.
Who can I contact with questions about summer camps?
